Baffert hoping Arrogate gives him 3rd Dubai World Cup win

02 April 2017

He was just another thoroughbred among many tens of thousands in America, and among the many millions foaled around the world over the last three centuries. Saturday was Arrogate's eighth race.

"He’s exceptional but you can't really make comparisons with Frankel because it's turf against dirt and that's so different". If he wins the Arkansas Derby he'll be a top two or three pick for Kentucky.

But first place for Arrogate on Saturday will brook no argument.

Runner-up to California Chrome past year, he was campaigned in America thereafter and while he failed to win, he ran several good races.

Arrogate has now won seven wins from eight starts. Surely he will be pointed to repeat engagements in the Breeders' Cup Classic and Pegasus.

For this reason, I bristle at how loosely the term "great" has been bestowed on some horses of fairly recent vintage. Now, I'm not saying there haven't been any truly great horses since the 1970s; of course there have.

Immediate plans call for Arrogate to be shipped back to the United States on Wednesday, after which the team will begin to plan out a campaign that would culminate in the 2017 Breeders' Cup Classic. "But I am not sure I have ever sit on one like this".

Mike De Kock, the Mubtaahij trainer, said: "It was a super-human effort to get over from stall 14 and you can rely on him with the accuracy of a Swiss watch". He's done things that a horse at his stage of his career is not supposed to do, and especially not to do with the ease that he seems to do it with. I told my wife "if this horse wins he's the most incredible horse I've seen in my life". "His recovery time is so quick".

Malaysian prosecutors have charged an Indonesian and a Vietnamese national, both women, in killing Kim Jong Nam. Pyongyang banned all Malaysians in North Korea from leaving the country until Kim's corpse was repatriated.

Which means Arrogate is not only truly great, he's a true original, too.

Going off a red hot odds on fancy after big wins in the Breeders' Cup Classic and Pegasus World Cup Invitational, the 4yo was always in the spotlight - and seemingly under a lot of pressure.

"He's getting smarter", Smith said. He stayed patient, trusted the horse beneath him, moved to the outside and accelerated with the line in sight.

"He worked very well on Sunday and I am happy with him".

"That's an extra weapon to have with a horse". Arrogate had missed the break at the start and was last in the 14-strong field. On the grass you can do that, but on dirt you can't do that very much, but this horse happens to be able to do that on the dirt. All his races have been on grass and his speed numbers are good for this group.

From my perspective, which includes witnessing most of Secretariat's races in 1972 and '73, including his spectacular Triple Crown victories, I believe Arrogate is not quite up to Secretariat's level; but, he certainly is one of the top 10 horses I have ever seen.

3pm: The first race on today's card is the $1m Godolphin Mile at 3.45pm.

This was perhaps, the second coming.
