Belinda Biafore: Women's wage gap still a drag for them, families, economies

05 April 2017

Created in 1996, Equal Pay Day is held in April to symbolize how far into the year women must work to earn what men did the previous year. While women on average are paid 20 percent less than men, the actual impact varies by race-black women are paid 37 percent less on average, and Hispanic women earn 46 percent less than men.

Women in America now earn 83 cents for every dollar earned by men doing the same job, according to the latest analysis by the Economic Policy Institute.

"This analysis shows just how damaging that lost income can be for women and their families, as well as the economy and the businesses that depend on women's purchasing power", said Debra L. Ness, president of the National Partnership. Until women break into those fields, "it will be tough to make a serious dent in the wage gap", she said.

Glassdoor chief economist Dr. Andrew Chamberlain has authored a new technical guide to help companies analyze their own pay data to determine if any unadjusted or adjusted wage gaps exist: How to Analyze Your Gender Pay Gap: An Employer's Guide. During the Ivanka Trump-led meeting, Trudeau and group members discussed ways to promote education, entrepreneurship, equal pay and paid leave for female workers.

Is this a nod to women's progress, and recognition that women's earnings as a percentage of men's has crept up in recent years?

Two killed in flooding as Cyclone Debbie wreaks havoc in Australia
Police on Friday found the body of a woman who disappeared in floodwaters near Murwillumbah just south of the Queensland border. The Logan river was nearing a peak of 10.3m at Waterford on Saturday night after reaching more than 15m at Beaudesert on Friday.

New Jersey needs a law that is stronger than the Lilly Ledbetter Act, so that employees who are unfairly compensated for years on end can get back every dime they earned.

63% of the time, women receive lower salary offers than men for the same job at the same company - this is an improvement since last year's report. If women get paid 20 percent less, here's a 20 percent discount to mark that day. A number of new state laws and local ordinances have been enacted in the a year ago that limit how an employer can use an applicant's current pay to establish starting pay. This is partly attributed to the fact that women are more apt to take on part-time work, though even among those who work full-time, males still put in more labor than females, 8.2 hours to 7.8 hours, respectively.

"I've had males ask me for more money, and it amazes me how confident they are in doing it", said Dapelo-Garcia, 54, an administrative director for patient access services at Stanford Health Care. Understanding how these decisions affect earnings and expected earnings in the future is important information for people - particularly young women - to have as they plan their careers and family life.

Of course, in addition to a wage gap within occupations, there is also a wage gap "between occupations".

I believe that there is a better solution than the current equal pay bill on the table, which is why I have been working for the last several months with the sponsors of S992 and the governor to find common ground. "The estimates for when the gender gap will close keep extending and now it's in the next century, so we'll see".
