More than 24 hours after he was lynched, tension still prevailed in the area and a huge posse of police personnel has been deployed in and around the village.
Bulandshahr's superintendent of police Man Singh Chauhan told the Hindu, "We have formed teams to nab the culprits".
Faced with the charge of right-wing activists repeatedly taking law into their hands in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today said there is "no remedy if someone makes up his mind" to blame a particular outfit.
The family of Ghulam Mohammad, who subsequently died, alleged that the activists belonged to the HYV, though the outfit said none of its members was involved in the incident.
Police released a statement that said: "In the sequence of events, on May 2, 2017, at around 11 am, Gavinder Singh, reached Sohi village along with 5-6 Hindu Yuva Vahini activists and started looking for the family members of Yusuf, who had married a 19-year-old woman of another religion and reached the mango orchard where Ghulam Ahmed was working".
For the past few years, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its affiliated organisations have carried out a systematic propaganda campaign alleging the existence of a Muslim plot to seduce and convert Hindu girls.
The spokesman of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, P.K. Mall, denied that any members of Adityanath's youth force had been involved in the attack.
"It was around 10 of them who had come on motorbikes, with saffron stoles tied on their heads", said Vakeel Ahmad. After the couple eloped, the girl's family, upset by her relationship with a Muslim man, lodged a kidnapping complaint against Yusuf at the Pahasu police state, the Hindu reported. He was allegedly attacked in an orchard by a group of men soon after the elopement. Most of the attacks have been linked to small, Hindu fringe groups like the militia being investigated for Tuesday's killing.
The release said a case of murder has been registered against Gajendra and five to six unknown persons under various sections of the IPC. Till Wednesday, May 3, night, the police had arrested three persons - identified as Pulkit Sharma (18), Lalit Sharma (20) and Hani Raghav (20).
Evidence pointed to involvement of Singh and others, police said.
