Joey Logano's Richmond win won't count towards NASCAR playoffs

06 May 2017

Joey Logano's victory in Sunday's Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond International Raceway will not count toward his playoff positioning after his vehicle failed a post-race inspection. "We're looking at the silver lining as something that's making us drive to win more and make us a little bit more determined to make it happen, so I think we can make up those points with the right attitude".

"The rules are really black and white, though". The crew chief told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Friday that the gap was between the pinion shim and the truck arm surface on the right truck arm. But after NASCAR took the No. 22 Penske Ford back to its Research and Development Center in North Carolina for a thorough technical inspection as it does to every winning vehicle, officials found the rear suspension didn't conform to its rules.

Crew chief Todd Gordon explained the penalty that led to his two-race suspension, saying a part was about 1/32 of an inch off after last weekend's win at Richmond International Raceway. Even though Logano will be officially and forever recognized as the victor of Sunday's race, the win does not qualify him for the playoffs. "Race Engineer Miles Stanley will serve as Joey Logano's crew chief this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway, while Greg Erwin will help call race strategy on Sunday". Teams have swerved after races to realign their suspensions after a race. The win doesn't count for qualification into the playoffs and Logano can't use the five bonus points for the playoffs that he earned for the win. "When you're a little bit over, we're sitting talking about what we are today".

Logano was docked 25 driver points and Penske has lost 25 owner points too. According to the penalty grid NASCAR issued, the No. 22 team did not adhere to the following: the Truck trailing arm spacer/pinion angle shim mating surfaces must be planar and must be in complete contact with corresponding mating surfaces at all points and at all times.

Denny Hamlin, who finished third place in the race at RIR, was also penalized following the post race inspection for having a missing lug nut. That's what Logano says hurt the most. "It has nothing to do with swerving".
