Miss District of Columbia wins 2017 Miss USA

Kara McCullough, a 25-year-old chemist working for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, was crowned Sunday at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center on the Las Vegas Strip.

She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with a focus on Radiochemistry from South Carolina State University, according to her biography on the Miss USA website. Miss New Jersey Chhavi Verg is a student at Rutgers University studying marketing and Spanish.

The Miss USA failed two attempts in 2015 and 2016 respectively and became first runner-up.

McCullough was born in Naples, Italy, but she was raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Miss District Of Columbia Kara McCullough is the victor of Miss USA 2017, but not too many people were happy with the result. Verg and the women representing Florida, North Dakota, Hawaii and CT described the challenges and opportunities they faced as immigrants.

"I want them to see that anything is possible if you work hard", said Linnette De Los Santos, who immigrated with her family from the Dominican Republic when she was 5 years old.
