CNN reported Saturday that Clarke plagiarized significant portions of his 2013 thesis on homeland security, failing to properly cite his sources 47 times. The cable network reported some of the plagiarised passages were taken from ACLU reports, the 9/11 Commission Report, a Washington Post article and a Pew Research Center report.
Clarke's thesis was replaced on the school's online archive with a message saying, "This item was removed from view at the discretion of the Naval Postgraduate School". The sheriff claimed last week that he will be joining the Department of Homeland Security.
Before the news broke, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke alerted Twitter that a reporter was accusing him of plagiarism.
Clarke ... earned a master's degree in security studies at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. This violates the Naval Postgraduate School's guidelines on plagiarism.
Some Clarke supporters and conservative Republicans, including Virginia gubernatorial candidate Corey A. Stewart, argued the CNN report blew the attribution issue out of proportion.
Clarke is not the first Trump administration figure to be caught using copy-paste a bit too liberally and without proper credit.
White House goes blue to honor nation's police officers
As those in uniform across this country already know, President Trump's highest priority is the safety and security of the American people.
According to the school's standards, if a student directly quotes a passage or source, they must indicate the source's words with quotation marks - which Clarke failed to do - or with an indented paragraph if the quote is long.
He added: "Guy is a sleaze bag". WUWM's Ann-Elise Henzl reports on Clarke's rhetoric and actions, and how they caught the attention of both admirers and critics.
David Lapan, a department spokesman, said by email that no announcement on Clarke had been made. The DHS has not yet confirmed his appointment.
Sheriff David Clarke supported Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, and has continued to praise hm since he was elected.
Clarke is known for his alignment with Pr*sident Donald Trump, tough talk, disgust with dissent, and over-the-top characterizations of people he disagrees with, including Black Lives Matter and anyone to the left of Genghis Khan.
Earlier in May a jury recommended charges against seven officials at the jail after an inmate was deprived of water for seven days straight and died of dehydration. If Clarke lands a job as an assistant secretary for the DHS he would have a role in policy matters related to immigration. At least four people died in Clarke's jail between April 2015 and November 2016, including a newborn baby who had been born inside the jail without the jail staff knowing.
