Congressmen Credit Capitol Police for Preventing 'Massacre'

The FBI has taken control of the investigation. The suspect is identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, IL. When they arrived, Alexandria police, along with members of the Congressional security detail, engaged the shooting suspect and provided aide to those injured. "I am thankful that the shooter was apprehended by law enforcement quickly, and his deadly intentions were not fully realized". The 2006 case was dismissed after the alleged victim didn't show up for the court hearing.

Congressman Steve Scalise, a member of House leadership, was shot and badly wounded and is now in stable condition at the hospital, along with two very courageous Capitol Police officers.

The Texas Republican also confirmed that Scalise would not be playing, as the congressman 'was critically injured and remains in critical condition, ' according to a tweet from the hospital.

After the incident was reported, Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL), who was there when the shooting happened, told CNN "there must have been 50 to 100 shots fired".

At least four others, including two police officers, were wounded at the shooting in Alexandria, Virginia.

Cincinnati Rep. Brad Wenstrup, who is a doctor by trade, administered aid to Scalise, according to Arizona Sen.

"I held a cloth over the wound to stop the bleeding as Brad was getting some kind of scissors device to cut through the trousers to try to have better access to Steve Scalise's wound and his hip", Brooks said. We are very fortunate that the Capitol Police were on the scene, and that the Alexandria Police Department and first responders who also arrived nearly immediately. Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California both spoke on the floor issuing calls for unity.

"This hatefulness that we see in this country today over policy differences has got to stop", he said.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) told the Associated Press that the gunman had "a rifle of some sort. a lot of ammo".

Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., described what he said was a "very strange" encounter with a man shortly before the shooting.
