The two wounded officers, later identified by elected officials as special agents David Bailey and Crystal Griner, returned fire on Hodgkinson, ultimately taking him down despite their injuries, Trump stated.
News 4's Lauren Trager uncovered Hodgkinson's most recent contact with law enforcement officers was in March, when he was reportedly doing target practice on his property with a high-powered rifle. According to a police report, a neighbor told police that they heard "50 shots".
Records from the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department show he had multiple run-ins with neighbors, complaining of them turning around in his driveway and damaging his yard.
"I yelled, 'Quit shooting toward the houses, '" he said.
Hodgkinson posted content favorable to Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on his page and signed a Change.org petition for the removal of Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
"This could be the first political rhetorical terrorist attack", Illinois Republican Rep. Rodney Davis, who was at the practice, told CNN's Brianna Keilar Wednesday morning before Hodgkinson had been publicly identified as the alleged shooter. The Washington Post reported that Hodgkinson owned a home inspection business but that his license expired last November and was not renewed.
In the hours after the attack in Alexandria, Virginia, a picture began to emerge of an attacker with a mostly minor arrest record who worked as a home inspector and despised the Republican Party. Court records show that his legal trouble started in the 1990s.

Hodgkinson also had arrests in his background for a series of minor offences and at least one more serious offence.
IL 18th District Representative Ray LaHood from Peoria and John Shimkus of the 15th District also play on the team, but were not at practice this morning.
Texas Rep. Roger Williams said a member of his staff was among those shot. "He was just walking and shooting", she said of the man, whom she described as white and wearing a T-shirt and shorts. His demeanor was "calm", witness Falisa Peoples said.
Sen. Jeff Flake said Matt Mika, director of government relations for Tyson foods who practices with the team, seemed to be the most seriously injured. "They were shooting at each other ... I am thankful that the shooter was apprehended by law enforcement quickly, and his deadly intentions were not fully realized", Patrick said.
The FBI and Alexandria Police held a joint press conference today on the Congressional shooting.
The 51-year-old is in a stable condition at George Washington University Hospital, and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
