Hike adds wallet, UPI payment features to messaging platform

Hike has been elusive when asked about their user numbers but have stated that the app now has over 100 million registered users in India. With UPI-enabled support in Hike, users can do instant and free bank-to-bank transfers with family and friends.

Hike introduced their version 5.0 on Tuesday with integration for bank-to-bank and peer-to-peer payment options. Swedish communications app Truecaller also started a mobile payment service in India this year based on the UPI platform.

The partnership between Yes Bank and Hike comes on the backdrop of the launch of Hike 5.0 the most comprehensive update that the platform has received in terms of its interface as well as operations.

He said, "Over the last six months, we've been working to bring a brand new experience to our users with one question in mind - 'How do we take all the things that users love about Hike and make it even better?' Hike 5.0 is our most ambitious step in that direction till date".

He added that the rollout to Android and iOS (Apple) users will be completed by June 25, while the wallet feature will be made available to Apple phone users by end of July. "With Hike 5.0 you can personalize your Hike world", said founder and CEO Hike Messenger, Kavin Bharti Mittal. Hike has placed a large emphasis on personalisation right up front with "App Themes". Finally, Hike is adding the text to stickers conversion feature for regional languages as well. Whatsapp and Paytm have over 200 million users each, twice of Hike's present base. Blue packets is an envelope that users can insert money into and send to their friends.

Their decision hasn't been finalized, but it could come down to which players fit better into the chemistry of the team. San Jose has two notable veteran free agents in Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. (Thornton and Marleau) have choices.

Kavin added, "With Blue Packets, we're going to change the way people send and receive money".

The company is also trying to become a platform wherein a user can do anything from shopping to mobile recharges to other bill payments from within the app, eliminating the need for multiple mobile apps.

Hike's larger rival, WhatsApp is also working on making a foray into digital payment services, starting with India. "We hope with Blue Packets we can give our users a new avenue to express themselves". Blue Packet can also be sent to a group of friends.

"No doubt payments have to be ubiquitous, so within four to five years, we will very likely have ticket bookings etc, not sure whether we will have it in 2017", Mittal said, adding that over time the app will have more transactional services if the demand is high.
