Michelle Carter deserves sympathy, not jail, says Amanda Knox

Carter was sentenced Thursday in Taunton Juvenile Court to two and a half years in jail including 15 months to be served immediately and the rest suspended until 2022. "Twenty years may seem extreme but it is still twenty more than Conrad will ever have", Bozzi said in the written statement she gave to the Herald.

"I was just sick to my stomach [at] the fact that she can just be free and my cousin, he's not here".

Roy's cousin, Makenna O'Donnell, spoke out to Good Morning America on Friday, saying she disagreed with the judge's decision to let Carter remain free on probation until her appeal.

When Roy suggested they should be like Romeo and Juliet, the lovers who killed themselves in the Shakespeare play, Carter said she didn't want them to die, the court was told.

The case was the first of its kind, and it was believed that Carter could face up to 20 years in prison - something which Conrad's cousin addressed on television.

"Mr. Roy's death is an unspeakable tragedy, and our deepest sympathies are with his family and friends; but while Mr. Roy's death is truly devastating, it is not a reason to stretch the boundaries of our criminal laws or abandon the protections of our constitution", Matthew Segal, legal director of the ACLU of MA, said in a statement.

'And she gets to sleep in her own bed tonight, she gets to eat breakfast, she gets to wake up with her family. By holding her accountable for Roy's death, we increase the tally of victims in this case, we ignore the mental health factors that lead to suicide, and we learn nothing about how to prevent it. He's watching us from above. Roy's sister, Camdyn Roy, called him her "best friend" and "role model" and said she will always be haunted by his death.

On July 12, 2014, a day before Roy was found dead, Carter wrote: "So I guess you aren't gonna do it then, all that for nothing".

'No normal human being who doesn't have problems would tell someone to get back in a truck that is a toxic environment.

"2 1/2 years is not enough", O'Donnell said.

"She admits in a subsequent text that she did nothing - she did not call the police or Mr. Roy's family", Moniz said in court. "I'm just confused like you were so ready and determined". The judge said those words constituted "wanton and reckless conduct" under the manslaughter statute. "I ask of you to invoke leniency in your decision-making process for my loving child Michelle".

The American Civil Liberties Union of MA issued a strong rebuke at the time, arguing the conviction violated free speech protections.

'I do believe she needs help and I do believe that she needs to take responsibility for her actions.

The American Civil Liberties Union of MA agreed that the case against Carter was not one of manslaughter and expressed anger that the sentencing further sets a unsafe example.

It was said she wanted to win sympathy and attention that came with being the "grieving girlfriend".
