McGregor vs Mayweather: Safety fears over eight-ounce gloves

18 August 2017

Having previously expressed his desire to fight Floyd Mayweather in studio in a previous appearance on the Conan O'Brien show, McGregor assured the host that he will be "going down in the history books" following his meeting with the undefeated Mayweather on Saturday week.

The megafight will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on August 26, with the undercard starting at 6:00 p.m.

Although Mayweather has been used to generating hundreds of millions of dollars from a single fight, this is new territory for White and McGregor - the previous pay-per-view sales record was 1.65m for the Irishman's rematch with Nate Diaz a year ago.

Using eight-ounce gloves is nothing new for Mayweather. "I believe first-round KO in 8-ounce gloves".

The two are set to fight at the 154-pound weight limit, which meant that 10 ounce boxing gloves are mandatory. "But eight-ounce gloves, he will be done in two".

What previous fights has he taken charge of?

Do I think it's going to be a competitive match-up? No. "How often he's worn the gloves or any of that doesn't really factor into - I didn't even know that, for instance".

Baltimore named a potential host city for 2026 World Cup
Next month, a shortlist of cities that will be part of the bid will be announced, before the bid is submitted in March, 2018. With a capacity of less than 80,000, Nissan Stadium is not a candidate to host the opening match or the final.

According to White, the estimate for total pay-per-view buys is around 4.9 million, which is 300,000 more buys than for the record-setting fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

Clements has judged four previous Mayweather fights, with Italy's Cavalleri judging just one - the Maidana rematch.

For me the most disappointing aspect is the fact that what promises to be a landmark occasion for boxing on 16 September has been overshadowed and is in danger of sailing by unnoticed by casual and would-be fans due to the money train and media circus that is Mayweather versus McGregor.

She is a respected boxing referee herself and has also worked as a MMA judge since 2006, judging at high-profile events including UFC 196 (when Nate Diaz stunned McGregor) and UFC 202 (when McGregor seized his revenge). "I do not see him absorbing the blows in the first few rounds, but we are ready for absolutely every scenario".

"It was one hell of a song", McGregor said in a recent interview with MMA Fighting.
