Human remains found on US warship that collided off Singapore: US Navy

23 August 2017

Ongoing search-and-rescue efforts for 10 missing USS John S. McCain sailors have turned up a number of bodies, Adm. Scott Swift, Pacific Fleet commander, told reporters Tuesday evening.

"The divers were able to locate some remains in those sealed compartments during their search today", Swift said. They are still working to recover the body and transfer them to the U.S. Navy for identification.

Monday's collision, which took place while the USS McCain was heading to Singapore on a routine port visit, left a gaping hole in the destroyer's hull.

The Maritime and Port Authority in Singapore says it has expanded the area of its search for 10 USA sailors who went missing in the collision of an American destroyer and an oil tanker.

An investigation is underway.

In August 2012, the guided missile destroyer USS Porter collided with an oil tanker in the Straits of Hormuz, which connect the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea.

Navy officials continue to investigate the Fitzgerald collision, and analysts said the McCain accident may cause them to examine it further still. The Indonesian navy said it had deployed two warships. "I have over 200 ships assigned to me, 60% of the United States Navy is assigned to the Pacific Fleet, so I am highly confident we can respond to any guidance or direction". No one was hurt in the first two incidents, but seven Navy sailors were killed in June in a collision between the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship off the coast of Japan.

American Celebrating Wedding Among Those Killed In Spain Attacks
As of about 8.30am the department was "not aware" of any other confirmed cases of Irish citizens caught up in the terror attacks. Both attacks were carried out by a single terrorist cell made up of about 12 people, according to Spanish police.

Malaysian Navy reports their divers, who are assisting in the search, also found one body.

At the time of writing, the warship was docked in Singapore while the search continues, after the rescue crews managed to stop the flooding of other compartments in the vessel's hull.

Naval analysts said the accidents might be a sign of crew fatigue among the US Navy in the Pacific, as it seeks to combat Chinese assertiveness in the South China Sea and North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

While in Singapore, America will provide messing and berthing services to McCain crew members and to support damage control efforts on board.

The admiral did not rule out some kind of outside interference or a cyber-attack being behind the latest collision, but said he did not want to prejudge the inquiry. The collision was reported at 5:24 am local time. The ship is named for his grandfather John Sidney McCain Sr. and his father, John Sidney McCain Jr.

The collision occurred just east of the Strait of Malacca, a 550-mile-long stretch of water that runs between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra, connecting the Pacific and Indian oceans, and is one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
