Baba Ram Rahim verdict: Curfew-like restrictions in Chandigarh, Panchkula

The case of sexual exploitation dates to 2002 when two women followers were allegedly sexually exploited by him at his sprawling campus in Sirsa in Haryana.

The Dera is situated on the outskirts of Sirsa town in Haryana, 260 km from Chandigarh.

It is notable that Gurmeet Ram Rahim is facing criminal charges, including rape, in a CBI court.

While the police have barricaded many points in Panchkula to restrict entry of vehicles, a large number of followers were seen walking in groups to reach their destination.

According to Haryana Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Ram Niwas, the state has got eight additional companies of paramilitary forces and an additional 2,500 police personnel from internal sources have also been mobilised for deployment in different parts of the state. Work services related to internet connectivity including the IT companies whose lifeline is internet connectivity to run the show, many professionals now have to wait for the governments decision to withdraw the curfew imposed on the mobile internet and data services in Chandigarh & tricity region.

Security forces have been deployed in Panchkula and other parts of Punjab and Haryana ahead of the court's ruling. All the schools and colleges have been ordered to remain shut.

The Punjab police have increased their measures because Dera followers were seeing stocking up on drums filled with petrol and diesel, sharp-edged weapons and stones at Naam Charcha Ghars in Faridkot.

Chandigarh also sealed its borders for the next two days to prevent any mayhem from spilling over. The states of Punjab and Haryana fear the Dera devout can resort to violence if the verdict by the special CBI court goes against Singh. He said the Western Command of the army was on standby to tackle any eventuality arising out of the judgment, expected on Friday afternoon.

The Ludhiana Police Commissioner RN Dhoke also met the executives of Dera and they have promised that they will keep peace and calm on August 25 whatever the court's verdict maybe. News reports also suggest that the cricket stadium in Chandigarh's Sector 16 has been designated as a temporary jail to detain the miscreants in case riots or violent protests break out.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh told the media in Chandigarh on Thursday evening that the Punjab government and police were fully prepared to deal with any situation emerging after the court verdict.
