NBA Revamps All-Star Game Format, Captains Choose Teams

05 October 2017

Depending on how the captains decide to select their teams, the two star players may never have to be teammates in an NBA All-Star Game again. "The captains will be the All-Star starter from each conference who receives the most fan votes in his conference".

Following similar, ultimately unsuccessful experiments in the National Hockey League and National Football League, the National Basketball Association has made a decision to give it a go and use the player captain format for their annual All-Star Game. Compare that to the West, where four guards - Stephen Curry, James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Klay Thompson - topped the 1 million mark.

Voting will still be conference-based until the results are in, then the top vote-getters from each conference will pick from the pool of players.

"We're looking forward to putting on an entertaining show in LA". Not that the All-Star Game "needs to be played with the same intensity as a Game 7, but both players and the league recognized changed was necessary". Coaches still select the 14 other reserves who play on the team after the starters are selected. A blind draw would be much more interesting.

Next year's All-Star game will be played in Los Angeles on February 18 (19 in Australia).

Roku to make $219m debut
Buttressing that success, Dawson said, is the fact Roku users aren't locked into any one ecosystem; it offers everything. Roku is actually losing money on its hardware even though it generates such a large percentage of the company's revenue.

Asked if he'd pick Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Kevin Durant for his All-Star squad, Curry said, "Definitely".

The NBA All-Star game has devolved into one big fast break, with epic dunks and minimal defense.

More details about how All-Star captains can draft their teams are expected to be released at a later date. SI.com's Ben Golliver wrote the process would be "far more fulfilling if the team captains were selecting from the 22 most deserving All-Star candidates regardless of their conference affiliation".

The other issue, as Love pointed out, is the numerous All-Stars flocking to the Western Conference. At least five of those players, deserving All-Stars if the lineups were chosen without regard to conference, will be left out when the initial rosters are chosen. West, folks. The NBA All-Star Game just added a little bit more fun - and possibly a lot more pettiness.
